Flinching Eye Collective

Saturday May 25th, 2013 8-9:30pm
free and open to the public, donations for traveling artists welcome

We hope you will join us Saturday May 25th for a a series of performances, screenings, and spectacles by Flinching Eye Collective. Hailing from all over the US, the group met in graduate school and has been working collectively to explore sound, video, performance, and trans-media practices. They will be taking over AUX Performance Space with a series of interventions in the space, allowing visitors to move around as multiple events happen one after the next or in some cases, concurrently. Individually, they are accomplished artists. But through a collective approach they are able to create a live experience that is exciting, dynamic, and more open to new approaches in the disciplines of media and performance.

Their process and attitude has its histories in artists like John Cage, or the Neo-Dadaists, such as Joseph Beuys, with their curiosities lying heavily on the indeterminate act within a larger visual culture. All artists within the group, with their various interests in divergent media, have a focused consideration of the sonic experience and how that experience develops, changes and collapses within differing architectural and social spaces.

Flinching Eye Collective is a group of interdisciplinary media artists whose body of work, while distinct, concurrently explores sound-based, interactive performances and video art. The F.E.C. formed in Colorado in 2011. Since June of 2012 they have migrated to different parts of the US. They utilize a touring structure similar to bands, but within the performance art context. Through this distinctive format we are able to gather interest and excitement from communities, in turn creating an atmosphere of curiosity and enthusiasm as opposed to assumption and apathy. Their exhibitions are multi-faceted, whether they are differing live performances, video, sound pieces, or some hybrid.

The artists of the FEC include Ryan Wade Ruehlen, Adán De La Garza, Max Bernstein, Matt Weedman, Tobias Fike, Mark Banzhoff, Scott Ferguson, and Benjamin Schrek. The presentation of their performance group takes the shape of both collaborative combinations as well as individual works.
