Free: James Dean Death Anniversary Screening
East of Eden

In memory of James Dean’s D-day we will be screening “East of Eden” for free.

On September 30th,1955 James Dean was killed in a tragic car accident on Route 466 in route to race his Porche Spyder “Little Bastard” in Salinas, California.

The film “East of Eden” is Dean’s first Hollywood film directed by Elia Kazan. It is based on the novel “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck. “East of Eden” is a complex narrative following the Hamilton and Trask families within the landscape of the Salinas Valley, California. The film enters the picture following the adult twin sons of Adam Trask, Aaron and Caleb, whose storyline closely mimics Cain and Abel from the Book of Genesis. John Steinbeck’s novel “East of Eden” is a masterpiece of The Great American novel capturing the distinct landscape and philosophies of the time when it was published in 1952. The adaptation of the film highlights the biblical allusion found throughout Steinbeck’s novel paired with Cal Trask’s struggle with identity which mimicked the teenage angst arising within the Post War United States in 1950’s. The role of Cal Trask launched James Dean’s acting (Hollywood) career and the identity he is known for still today.
