Wednesday, June 20th, 5 – 8PM
Abigail Levine + Tina Plokarz
Performances at 5 & 6pm and Conversation at 7pm

Join choreographer Abigail Levine, curator Tina Plokarz, and commissioned ‘performance witnesses’ at Vox Populi for the final day of performances at 5PM and 6PM and a conversation at 7PM of “Restagings No. 2: Of Serra (to movement)”. In duet Abigail Levine and Vitche-Boul Ra transform Richard Serra’s steel sculptures through the directness of performance. Hear the artists and witnesses speak about their experience with staging sculptural objects as performance in the gallery context.

In conjunction with the current group exhibition Anticipation, curated by Tina Plokarz, choreographer and dancer Abigail Levine presents Restagings No. 2: Of Serra (to movement) in the month of June. In her new performance installation, Levine translates the precariousness and interdependence in Richard Serra’s iconic “prop” sculptures into the immediacy of performance and the human body. For two hours each day, dancers perform looping solos and duets. Their movements are recorded on a graphite panel, mounted on the wall of Gallery 1. Of Serra is the second work in Levine’s Restaging series which reads visual artworks as scores for performance. Drawing from visual and performance art alike, the performances examine our embodied experience of time, physical work and the differences in our repetitions.

Join the artist at Vox Populi and witness the physical transformation of sculpture. Abigail Levine performs both alone and accompanied by Philadelphia artist Vitche-Boul Ra. Sound design by composer Paula Matthusen.

Of Serra was kindly supported by residencies, funding, and assistance from the Center for Performance Research (CPR), Centro Mexicano de la Música y Art Sonoras (CMMAS), Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI), and New Music USA.
