Bhob Rainey / Mary Lattimore + Jeff Zeigler / Gabriel Saloman

AUX presents an evening of exploratory music with local luminaries Bhob Rainey and the duo of Mary Lattimore + Jeff Zeigler and featuring the Philadelphia debut of the Vancouver based composer Gabriel Saloman.

After nearly a decade forging a unique path through the American noise underground as a member of the seminal duo Yellow Swans, Gabriel Saloman has developed his own distinct voice as a soloist, releasing a cluster of emotive and rich albums on various artist imprints (Shelter Press, Miasmah, Infinite Greyscale). Live his performance retains the visceral catharsis of his previous collaboration, now punctuated with moments of cinematic scale and lyrical subtlety that points to his music’s origins as compositions for contemporary dance. Sharing the evening with him are two of Philly’s most talented composer/improvisors (and Pew Fellows): saxophonist Bhob Rainey and harpist Mary Lattimore. Mary is joined by her collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Jeff Zeigler, with whom she recently released the album Slant of Light (Thrill Jockey) to wide acclaim.

Bhob Rainey is an award-winning composer / performer, saxophonist, and sound designer. In 1998, with trumpeter Greg Kelley, he founded the duo Nmperign, which quickly became a model for a new phase of non-idiomatic improvisation often referred to as “lowercase” or “EAI” (Electroacoustic Improvisation). In 2000 he founded The BSC, an improvising large ensemble, in which he developed techniques for an improvisational discipline that were eventually outlined in his 2011 publication, . Throughout the late 1990’s and early 2000’s he performed globally and collaborated with numerous improvisers of both the (then) current and previous generations, including Axel Dörner, Andrea Neumann, Günter Müller, Michel Doneda, Lê Quan Ninh, and many others. Rainey was awarded the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2013, and in 2014 he received a Subito grant from the American Composers Forum to complete a multimedia project with filmmaker . Among other things, he is currently working on a long-term project with New Paradise Labs dealing with radical contingency, as well as creating multichannel electronic works in collaboration with Chris Cooper under the moniker “Prants”. To date, Rainey has over 30 releases as a leader or co-leader.

Mary Lattimore + Jeff Zeigler
On their first record as a duo, Slant of Light, harpist Mary Lattimore and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Zeigler emerge completely synergetic, offering up stunning improvisations that are as advanced melodically as they are texturally. The four pieces on Slant of Light are seductive and picturesque, with Lattimore’s elaborate melodies blossoming out of Zeigler’s tonal beds of synthesizer and guitar. Equally inviting and challenging, Slant of Light is an impressionistic work that draws on musical histories ancient and contemporary, existing outside current trends in music as a whole. There is nothing that sounds remotely like it. Lattimore has recorded and performed with Kurt Vile, Meg Baird, Jarvis Cocker, Wrekmeister Harmonies and Steve Gunn, to name a few, and her years touring with Thurston Moore inform some of Slant of Light’s noisier moments. Zeigler has played with members of Chris Forsyth’s Solar Motel Band, The War on Drugs, and A Sunny Day in Glasgow in his group Arc in Round.
