Join us for the return of Ohio noise musican Mike Shiflet, whose music has recently blossomed into gorgeous shards of noise with buried melodies, or “mangled new age,” as he’ll apparently have it. Mike will perform both solo and in duo with local computer noiser Ian Fraser.

Mike Shiflet is a sound artist from in Columbus, Ohio. His composition and performance techniques involve a combination of guitar, analog noise generators and Macintosh computer. The end result is a mix of rich drones, fluttering noises and underlying hints of melody. His self-released 2010 recording, Llanos, received national and international acclaim from outlets such as NPR, The Wire, and Pitchfork. His forthcoming full-lengths will be released by the highly esteemed Type Records.
In addition to recording as a solo artist, he has been involved in a variety of groups ranging from the violin-led improv group Burning Star Core and the laptop duo Scenic Railroads to performance troupe Noumena and cathartic sludge/noise band Sword Heaven. He ran GMBY Records (known as Gameboy before legal threats from Nintendo) from 1998 until 2008 and released exactly 100 albums by experimental sound and noise artists from across the globe.
Ian M. Fraser is a computer musician working in free improvisation and algorithmic based composition. His primary focus is generative structures, pseudo-artificial intelligence, stochastic processes and networking systems for audio/visual output.
Eric Laska is an artist working primarily with sound. By means of an engagement with the Internet, video, live performance and installation, his concern lies in a critical approach to sound “IRL”, evoking a space in which it’s meta-material dimension can shine through.
