The L Word Gen Q Screening Series
Sunday, January 12, 2020 | 5:30 PM – 8 PM
ABOUT THE EVENT
The original run of The L Word was a television series created by Ilene Chaiken which aired on Showtime from 2004-2009. It predominantly starred Jennifer Beals (Bette Porter), Leisha Hailey (Alice Pieszecki), Laurel Holloman (Tina Kennard), Mia Kirshner (Jenny Schecter), Katherine Moennig (Shane McCutcheon), Pam Grier (Kit Porter), and Rachel Shelley (Helena Peabody). The series is largely known for its considerable contribution to lesbian media, satisying lesbians’ “ferocious desire not only to be seen in some literal sense… but to be seen with all the blood and angst and magic that you possess”(1) and it’s immensely irritating theme song .
Please join Vox Populi member and BDOC (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Big%20Dyke%20On%20Campus%20BDOC) Katie Rauth for an in depth dive into the show’s reboot The L Word: Generation Q. Every other week, beginning January 12, we will be screening two episodes of the new show, inviting audiences to react in real time. Following the screening, audiences are invited to unpack and process in true lesbian fashion, answering questions like “How is the new spin-off attempting to reconcile the original series’ multifaceted failure? What does Generation Q even mean? How does curating Provocations and The Art of Dissent qualify Bette to be running for mayor?” For each screening, you’ll be supplied with links to suggested readings that will inform the conversation, in case you’re interested in getting down and dirty with academia.
Whether you’re looking for a free place for your Showtime-less ass to catch up on the series, are excited to dive into some heady discourse about lesbian media or are just looking to for the hottest lesbian cruising spot in Philly this winter, The L Word: Generation Q Screening Series is the place to be!
This is a free event. Themed snacks and drinks will be provided- cash or card for the bar!
