About the Exhibition
Vox Populi presents “Teaching At The End of Times,” an exhibition at Atelier Gallery. This show combines an array of artist-led experiments in modular and mobile pedagogy, alongside a programming series. This exhibition will showcase Vox Populi’s new mobile teaching classroom, an object and tool that has emerged from a year-long collaborative effort co-curated by Stephanie Bursese and Emmanuela Soria Ruiz. The process began with a series of neighborhood-specific focus groups, populated by Vox Populi’s community partners, including numerous artists, builders and leaders from over 15 separate Philadelphia organizations, and facilitated by Tiny WPA. These sessions fueled the creation of a mobile teaching unit, which will embark on two months of experimental outdoor programming, engaging the public through workshops on a wide array of topics such as subversive aerobics, sick positionality, harm reduction, and anti-colonial memory, among others.
Alongside the Teaching At The End of Times project, this exhibit includes Tiny Farm Wagon, a Philadelphia-based nomadic cart that promotes the threads of wellness that run through Black life; “We the News”, a mobile newsstand that features neighborhood news by artist Lizania Cruz; Artists and organizers Bilphena Yahwon and Kimi Hanauer, both members of the Baltimore-based “Press, Press” and founders of Archive Liberia and the Center for Liberatory Practice & Poetry respectively, will show a new collaborative installation; and teaching props and sculptural objects by artists Marcela Torres and Alx Velozo will also be featured in the exhibition.
