As a result of the prevailing simplification, standards, and measures in our environment, Jones is rallying for the slippage of definition in an imagined armature; capsizing the points in a constellation into a willful dissonance. He draws upon personal research and corporeal experiences to construct a surrogate vessel that is directed by actions that reflect a similar aura to the origin of the work. By incorporating associative materiality and free-form structures, the resulting objects then have a potential to escape themselves. The various perimeters constructed from the equations between shape, utility, and reason are ruptured when put through a method of abstraction that utilizes the literal while becoming transcendental. Experimentation leads Jones to make assemblages that resist structures of organization and sabotage frameworks to build a pursuit of focused escapism, to leave with answers to previously unrealized questions.
Ian Jones was born in Cleburne, TX. He received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He was a resident in 2011 at the Vermont Studio Center. He has exhibited nationally in Texas, Missouri, Georgia, New York, and Michigan. He lives and works in Chicago, IL.
