The Stand (Possessing Powers) is a series of sculptures based on works by the neoclassical sculptor Hiram Powers, the so-called Father of American Sculpture. Cox-Richard’s carved plaster sculptures focus on the elements that structurally support the figure in his works. They are originals and copies, homage and critique, familiar and strange, created in an attempt to see what new content might be revealed when figure and ground begin to conflate.
Lily Cox-Richard is a sculptor currently based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She earned her MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University, and has been an artist in residence at CORE Program (Houston, TX), MacDowell Colony (Peterborough, NH), Kompact Living Space (Berlin), and AREA Gallery (Caguas, Puerto Rico). Lily has received fellowships and grants from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (the Eliza Prize and the Meredith Long Prize) and The American Craft Council. Recently, she was awarded a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship for The Stand (Possessing Powers).
