Dance it Out features artists who pay attention to the (re)organization of the body. Flash, narrative, concept, self-seriousness, formalism – all embodied in rigorous choreographic works that feature fierce performances and examinations of bodily transformation. This is a new series curated by Pew Fellow and Philadelphia choreographer Meg Foley. Through unique pairings of performances, Foley will help illuminate artists that pose similar questions about the body but from radically different perspectives. By posing artistic dichotomies alongside participatory interventions with the audience, the series will push the audience to move between the interior and exterior of the body in the acts of watching and dancing. Join us for Dance It Out’s first iteration on October 12 at AUX Space with Dance it Out: Sebastian and Shannon as we explore questions of agency and selfhood on bodies we know well and not so well.

Sebastian will perform an original piece of music and choreography alongside performer Drew Kaiser entitled “I Am Because I Am.” Sebastian’s work mashes up elements of music video dance culture, drag, performance art, and theater into a unique exploration of spectacle, identity, and queerness. Within grandiose modes of self-presentation, Sebastian’s choreography and performance forces audiences to indulge and evaluate our desires for a body culture that is glam, fabulous, and entertaining.
Shannon Murphy will present the piece “Parade of Traces” performed by dancers Michele Tantoco and William Robinson. Shannon’s choreography explores the endurance and limitations of the anatomical and emotional body. Colliding the world of dance with elements of theater, Shannon’s choreography is a rigorous physical exploration of bodily expression as a means to experiment with presentation of one’s personal identity. With ecstatic physical energy and complicated maneuvering, her work demands our attention to the human form as our foremost vehicle for expression.
Between works, be ready to push your body to its own limits in a participatory experience that will heighten the evening’s emotion, intensity, and understanding of our separate and shared bodies.

Sebastian (On Facebook) in a Philadelphia artist, dancer, and choreographer. After studying Theatre at Rutgers University, Sebastian began exploring dance on his own and has since been producing his own work in Philadelphia. He wants nothing more than to satisfy your desire to be indulged, to be thrilled and to be enraptured.
Shannon Murphy, co-director of idiosynCrazy productions (Website), is an Ohio native who joined the Philadelphia dance community in 2007. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Dance from Point Park University, Murphy began her exploration into the somatic and movement healing arts. She is now a level three Franklin Method Educator, one of a select few in the United States. Murphy uses the Franklin Method in both her pedagogy and choreography, and has taught FM at many Universities and dance companies, training programs, is on staff at University of the Arts, and holds workshops specifically for veterans and people with PTSD. As a choreographer, her work displays physical investigation, emotional intrigue, and a curiosity of functionality both physically and metaphorically. Murphy was a 2012-13 FringeArts Lab fellow. Her work has been presented at The Goose Route Dance Festival, InFlux, Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s NewMoves Contemporary Dance Festival, Community Education Center’s New Edge Mix, Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, and Group Motion Dance Company’s Spiel Uhr, and was a New Edge Resident Artist in Dance at the CEC where she created her latest evening length work in 2011.
