Vox Populi and Aux Performance Space are pleased to announce a series of events in June, organized by Curatorial Fellow, Jamillah James. James is a New York-based curator who succeeds Marissa Perel, Aux’s Fall 2013 Curatorial Fellow. Over the course of two weekends in late June, James will present two performances, as well as an artist talk and screening. These events conclude a four-month fellowship, which included two months of research and two months of programming.

Performing Collectivity: In Conversation with Salem Collo-Julin and Maria Dumlao
Curatorial Fellow Jamillah James will moderate a conversation between Philadelphia-based artists Salem Collo-Julin and Maria Dumlao. The artists will discuss their histories of collective participation—Collo-Julin in Temporary Services and Dumlao in Brainstormers—and how their activities, ranging from exhibition-making and self-publishing to performative protests and street-level institutional critique, reimagine what creative production entails, and decenter its generation, interpretation, experience and circulation.
Salem Collo-Julin is an artist, writer, and performer who collaborates with the artists Brett Bloom and Marc Fischer in the group Temporary Services. She is currently building a machine to navigate emotional landscapes, and working on a stand-up comedy routine. Temporary Services is based in the three cities in which its three members live: Chicago, Philadelphia, and Copenhagen. Since 1998, Temporary Services has produced exhibitions, events, projects, and publications. Some of their accomplishments include but are not limited to creating and running Half Letter Press (a publication imprint), co-founding Mess Hall (an experimental cultural center in Chicago that closed in 2013 after offering completely free programming for ten years), collaborating with a variety of people both in “art circles” and out, and realizing projects in public spaces in cities all over the world. The distinction between art practice and other creative human endeavors is irrelevant to Temporary Services. One example of this concept can be explored in their Prisoners’ Inventions project, a book and ongoing traveling exhibition created in conjunction with their collaborator Angelo.
Born in Manila, Philippines, Maria Dumlao is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited and screened Art in General, Momenta Art Gallery, and Schroeder Romero Gallery in NYC, The Contemporary Museum in Hawaii and internationally. She’s had residencies at Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY, and at free103point9’s Wave Farm in Acra, NY. Her collaborative work with Brainstormers has appeared at Brooklyn Museum of Art and Bronx Museum of Art (a collaboration with Guerilla Girls) and received funding from The Puffin Foundation. She received a BA in Studio Art and Art History at Rutgers College in New Brunswick, NJ and an MFA in Studio Art at Hunter College-CUNY in New York, NY. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2010, she’s been involved with Little Berlin and Vox Populi.
