BASE MATTER is a new event series intended to explore the intersections of transgression and transformation, an experiment of play with the void – a dive into culture’s mysterious blind spot. The title, pilfered from the writings of George Bataille, attempts to bind a wide variety of artists working in diverse mediums – music, performance art, writing, visual art – through a common theme: a desire for higher insight through shared willingness to examine what is hidden.
The second event, July 31, will feature touring acts Future Blondes, Breathing Problem, How I Quit Crack, and Skullcaster, all hailing from Austin, as well as a performance by Quebecoise multimedia artist Marie Jane Segolene, in town from Montreal. In addition, works from NYC-based painter, illustrator, and designer Jamie Fletcher will also be on view as part of a special one-night exhibition.
“A BLACK HOLE: its negative and creative energy discloses the gift of unknowing, the decapitation of the summit and the eruption of other forces. It functions as the blind spot.”
