????? (‘daiKYo,furo shIKI) is a brainbending collaboration between Tamio Shiraishi and Cammisa Buerhaus, that fuses handmade sound, free noise, and guttural blooms of tone poetry. The collaborative duo will be performing at AUX on Tuesday, September 29th with filmmaker & poet Lonely Christopher at 8pm with a suggested donation of $7-10.
Artist and multi instrumentalist Buerhaus plays her self built wood organ, half sculpture, half hallucinatory drone machine. Shirashi was a central figure in the Club Minor scene in Japan, jammed in Taco and A-Musik, helped form Fushitsusha, and has released numerous works of site specific saxophone playing. His style is some of the most atom splitting minimalism to ever locate your body in space. Thus, the sound of ????? is a tense drama whose nerve chilling lines literally encodes the space for terrifying truths to appear all around you.
“A hale old lady aged 91 who lives next door is absolutely indifferent to these sounds. An always crying out baby boy aged 1 who lives below my apartment is most likely never concerned about th ese sounds. 90 years ago, i guess, they never imagined sounds like this. 90 years later, who knows, they may forget about sounds like this.”
Tamio Shiraishi on YUU for Marc Masters column 200 Words
“Buerhaus is a formidable guitarist, coming out of the no wave school of Lydia Lunch circa “Orphans”, and the combination of her euphoric technical refusal and Shiraishi’s eruptive saxophone and vocals brings to mind a more bluntly claustrophobic Abe/Takayanagi duo. But the music feels strikingly original, narcotic in its ability to push the basic tenets of duo exchange into a place where the music seems to be governed by its own generative logic. Automating is the word that Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound would use when he felt like he wasn’t so much composing anymore as responding to the exigent demands of the music. But this is deeper than that; compulsive, uncanny body music that feels like it is channelled by ghosts.” David Keenan, The Wire, Sept 15
