Join us for a free movie night featuring the Philadelphia premiere of Jake Dibeler’s short film HORRORPORN. Prior to the screening Jake will be present to leisurely peruse clips of horror (porn maybe?) influential to making the film and his performance art. HORRORPORN exhibits a no restraint pairing of two genres in endless flirtation with each other: horror and pornography. Dibeler attributes horror from Italian to B-Movie as having part inspiring the undertaking in his recent short film. He specifically mentions directors that deal with the body within the horror genre, like Stephen Sayadian, David Cronenberg and Brian Yunza. HORRORPORN parts off with any predecessors where gore and penetration meet. A pale comparison might still be made via Friedkin’s ‘Exorcist’ as Dibeler’s HORRORPORN is ripe with sexual deviance and Puritan guilt.
Jake often uses horror tropes in relation to the body within his performance, employing visceral stagings that are playfully violent, often comprised of blood, knives and coca cola. He performs using the body, revealing an adolescent sexuality that’s seemingly a cathartic type of self-discovery. His work is aptly described by critic Katherine Rochester: “Like a full-throated rendition of your favorite pop song in a sleazy bar, Dibeler’s performances may have the veneer of naive optimism but they twang with the dissonance of an emotional breakdown.” Through evoking the fourth wall, Jake’s sensibility as a performer extends within the making of HORRORPORN. After the screening we will discuss in depth with the artist about his performance work in relation the film.
Jake Dibeler, a native Philadelphian, has performed previously at Aux Performance Space (Philadelphia), ASHES/ASHES (Los Angeles), Secret Project Robot (NYC), American Medium (NYC) . He regularly produces an online series K/K OK in collaboration with Mia Ardito on americanmedium.tv and performs along with Simon Leahy and Michael Prommasit in their band bottoms, described as “two shitty drag queens, a 303, and a drummer.”
