Celebrating The Opening of Exhibitions by The Institute of Queer Ecology, Yaloo, Levi Bentley, Maddie Hewitt, Chloé Rossetti and LifeLines: Voices Against the Other Death Penalty

About the Event

Join us for the launch of our 2019-2020 season on Friday, September 6, from 6-10pm as we celebrate the opening of new exhibitions by The Institute of Queer Ecology, Yaloo, Levi Bentley, Maddie Hewitt, Chloé Rossetti and LifeLines: Voices Against the Other Death Penalty. Always free-to-attend, come on by for a drink and six new exhibitions exploring issues of identity, environment, freedom and confinement.

In Gallery One, Common Survival is a multi-format publication; an untethered collection of a 33 survival tactics. Produced by Miami-based artists The Institute of Queer Ecology in 2018, the project exists as a collection of prints, objects, videos, texts and more, submitted by artists responding to a call for work that urgently responds to the American government’s systematic erasure of queer and environmental issues, with a collection of strategies for strengthening our extended multispecies communities.

South Korean-born and Chicago-based artist Yaloo presents K Delicacies in Gallery Two, an immersive portrait of Dr. Philip Jaisohn (서재필, Soh Jaipil). Dr. Jaisohn (1864- 1951) was a medical doctor, publisher, and a proponent of Korean independence who dedicated his life and writings to political activism and boundary breaking. Yaloo explores Dr. Jaisohn’s emotional, psychological and ideological landscape through a video essay projection-mapped onto sculptures.

In Gallery Three, Vox member Levi Bentley presents Fence Lines, a project which explores the poem as a pedagogical text, text as object and fence as text. Using Gerry, an alphabet formed using the shapes of gerrymandered districts created by Ben Doessel and James Lee to organize the text, Bentley explores the alphabet of fences while drawing firm correlation to forms political exclusion.

Vox member Maddie Hewitt presents Turning to Nurture in Gallery Four, an exhibitions that ruminates on the consequences of the decision to overturn the Migratory Bird Rule adopted in 1986 to the Clean Water Act, and imagines what it would be like if we were migratory birds losing a part of our habitat. The exhibit highlights ways in which the human experience resembles that of our avian counterparts, seeking to reorient ourselves in relationship to nature to foster empathy and compassion towards the natural world.

Vox Populi’s Community Engagement Committee presents How Are We Free?, a project organized by LifeLines: Voices Against the Other Death Penalty, in the Front Space. How Are We Free? is a visual art exhibit that explores the nature of freedom and confinement through creative collaboration between people who have been sentenced to die in prison and visual artists outside the prison walls.

And, as part of our 4th Wall series dedicated to presenting new film/video work by emerging artists, Vox Populi’s Black Box Committee presents Chloé Rossetti: The French Chef with Julia Child: Abortifacient Herbs. In the film, Julia Child (played by Anita Revolution Now) takes us on a tour of herbal abortion remedies from around the world. Bon Courage!
