Vox Populi Gallery and Jim Strong present an evening of Poetry and Experimental Sound with visiting artists, Marcy Hanneman, Maya Martinez + Luxin Zhang, and Melkings with Loraine Wible. This will be Jim Strongs last gallery event for the summer in preparation for his upcoming solo exhibition in September along with a new season of related programming. Come out and celebrate the wonderful shows we’ve had the pleasure of hosting this year and help us ring in the summer, introducing two recently joined Vox Populi members, Luxin Zhang and Loraine Wible.
Maya Martinez is a poet, from Florida, and likes to dance. Recent work includes The Play, recently performed at MoMa PS1.
Marcyanne Hanneman is a writer and performer in Asheville, NC. She has done work with Black Mountain College Museum, and other local arts organizations, with an eye on experimentation and failure. Her everyday practices include laughing, and drinking water.
Luxin Zhang is an interdisciplinary artist who works in Philadelphia, PA (formerly Syracuse, NY). Her work often takes the form of Performance, video, sound and photography. She holds a B.S from Far Eastern University and is currently obtaining her MFA in Transmedia at Syracuse University, College of Visual and Performing Arts, where she works as Adjunct Faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistant. As a classically trained vocalist, Luxin is fascinated by the intersection of image and sound, acoustic space, and the pulleys and strings that hold everything together. She has exhibited and performed internationally in galleries, museums, and concert halls, including “Civil Twilight- Video Screening” at Everson Museum, Syracuse, presented by the SU Department of Transmedia, and Urban Video Project; and “North American University Lunar New Year Gala Spring” at David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center, New York. Her work was also shown in “The Trouble with Flesh” at Light Work, Syracuse, N.Y. Luxin Zhang recently Joined Vox Populi Gallery in Philadelphia, PA
Melkings is the duo of Thomas Deangelo (Crisis of Taste) and Jim Strong, with an otherwise open membership. They Create flawed sound events for recorded and live audiences using found text, everyday objects and appliances, Tape Manipulation and homemade instrumentation. They will be joined by visual artist and current Vox Populi Member, Loraine Wible for this performance.
