Rebekah Potter & James Gillispie
Curated by Sam Farnsworth
November 6 - 29, 2009
Potter uses fabric and the sewn mark to explore the continuum between the two-dimensional picture plane and three-dimensional space surrounding it. Of special interest are what she sees as the numerous, and incremental, steps between these two defined measurements. The artist looks to these spaces for new ways of creating space, or the illusion thereof.
In a series of large paintings, Gillispie constructs archetypal forms that excavate, and illuminate, systematic structures rooted in nature. Using traditional oil painting techniques the artist looks to describe an imagined place in nature that exists on its own, without human interference.
