A group of like-minded, independent art groups currently active in Philadelphia, have come together for the CITYWIDE project. Through CITYWIDE, these groups will unify Philadelphia’s artist-run collectives in a multi-gallery month-long exhibit. Throughout November 2013, more than twenty collectives will participate in an exchange of exhibitions, ideas and practices. The multi-venue exhibit will be located in different neighborhoods throughout the city.

From November 1 – 25, 2013, Vox Populi hosted Space 1026, Marginal Utility, Magic Pictures Gallery, Termite TV collective and Basekamp within it’s exhibition spaces. As part of the exchange, the Vox Populi collective re-visited the inaugural show “Fort-Thunder” (an homage to the space of the same name from Providence, RI) at Space 1026 located at 1026 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA. Vox Populi assisted integrally within this project by helping oversee grant funds and finances for the multi-venue project; Citywide was generously funded by a grant from the Knight Arts Foundation, with additional funds from individual supporters through a series of community fundraisers and an exhibition catalogue Kickstarter campaign.

Participating artist-run galleries will host and exchange with other spaces resulting in a collaborative exchange across the board geographically and ideologically.  CITYWIDE will simultaneously showcase work from over 19 Philadelphia based collective galleries and four curatorial and project based groups, representing in total –  over 100 local artists.  The essence of CITYWIDE lies in collaborative action.  CITYWIDE  will continue to promote the city of Philadelphia as a successful model for artistic empowerment.

During the month long November 2013 exhibition, a panel discussion was hosted with visiting and local critics as well as a keynote speaker. At the conclusion of the project, a printed color exhibition catalogue was created to serve as a tangible record of the collaborative roving exhibition  CITYWIDE’s promotional materials also included a hand-illustrated map to encourage participants to venture into a variety of neighborhoods and explore alternate spaces throughout the city.  See the venues online on this Google Map.
